The Universal Product Code timeline

1932
Wallace Flint started it all by automating the way customers purchase products. His punch card system got things started, but was expensive and a hassle.

1948-1952
Bernard Silver, Norman Woodland, and Jordon Johanson worked on ways to read product information at the checkout counter, including using ultraviolet ink.

1972-1973 (Jan. 1972 – Uniform Grocery Product Code Council)
As different groups worked to standardize the system, a Kroger store in Cincinnati agreed to do a year and half test study, but because of printing problems it didn’t work. This necessitated a new linear barcode which would come about through the efforts of George Laurer at IBM. His invention of the “Universal Product Code” (UPC) was accepted as an industry standard on April 3rd 1973. Visit his site www.laurerupc.com for more information.

2002
In August, the UCC entered contractual agreements with their new customers, one new requirement being annual dues. Over the next several months, the UCC billed old customers for these new dues. As a result, the UCC was sued and lost the class action lawsuit.
